Derek, Well, what can I say? An absolute gentleman of the highest order. Someone I considered a friend even though our paths crossed rarely over the last few years. A man whom never, ever had a bad word to say about anyone or anything. A gem. Derek adored his family and lived for them. Our last conversation was indeed, less about music and more about family. He loved Aoibhe with all his heart. He was so proud of Cora and Cole and was so looking forward to all that they were going to become. It goes without saying what a truly gifted musician Derek was. The first project we did together was Serge Stavila’s album back in the late 90’s. Recording drum tracks on an electronic drum kit in Derek’s bedroom in his apartment in Stoneybatter. Really great times. Always good banter and great craic. Derek so welcoming and encouraging. Through the years we did numerous gigs together and a sprinkling of albums. It was always a joy when I heard Derek was going to be involved in a project that I was playing on. Whether it be producing, playing or writing charts, Derek’s work was always top class. You know, I could talk for days about Derek’s musical talent but much much more important was who he was as a man. One of the nicest guys you could ever hope to meet. Rest easy old friend. Xx
