I had the pleasure of being a classmate of Derek’s in trinity from 2019 to 2021. Derek was incredibly friendly, inclusive and enthusiastic from day 1. Unfortunately the pandemic meant that we were only in class in person for 6 months, but I know Derek made a great impression on us all in that short time and for the rest of the course, especially with his brilliant presentation of his masters project. We got to meet up again for our graduation in November 2021 and had a good catch up then, and Derek who was driving home kindly offered to take my diploma and mind it for me rather than have it lying around in the pub while I carried on celebrating. I‘m glad that I got to see Derek before Christmas and have another chat, and very sad that we won’t be able to meet up for the coffee we had planned in the new year now. My deepest sympathies to Derek’s family. Rest in peace, Derek.
