Derek was one of my classmates in the Music and Media Technology program. We shared a few classes, but I got to know him a little later in the year when we were all planning the graduate show. Derek and I were in charge of copywriting — but his contribution to the show went far and beyond that. He streamlined the planning, helped keep all of us on task, and contributed so many great ideas. And he didn’t just make suggestions, he acted on them, and supported us all. I think it was clear to everyone in the course that he wasn’t just a brilliant musician. I really enjoyed getting to know him a little better during the copywriting planning meetings. We talked about working in music in Ireland and the Dublin music scene (which was especially valuable to me as an American). I could tell he found his work at BIMM so fulfilling and he was so proud of his family. I can't imagine how they must feel right now but want to offer my sincere condolences.
